Youngstown is located on the Mahoning River between Pittsburgh and Cleveland and midway between New York City and Chicago via Interstate 80. Its population is estimated at 64,000+ according to the U.S. Census Bureau and it encompasses 34.60 square miles. Named after the young settler, John Young, it was officially established in 1802.
Youngstown became a prominent city during the booming steel industry era. During that time, it drew extensive numbers of immigrants & citizens of the southern US and the “Steel City” grew strong well into the 1960’s.
Now, the largest employer of the city is Youngstown State University, an urban public campus that serves 15,000 students. The Youngstown Incubator, a high ranking global research firm in the heart of downtown, houses many start-up technology companies. A mainstay of Youngstown’s current industrial industry has been the General Motors Lordstown plant which is located in nearby Trumbull county.
